Our next meeting:
Date: Thursday, JUNE 8, 2006
Time: 7:30 PM
Place: Marriott Hotel (meeting room, refreshments and parking courtesy of the Marriott Hotel)
Our next meeting. The guest speaker will be Brandt Grotte, our newest City Council member. Brandt was elected to the City Council on a campaign that neighborhoods are necessary to the life of San Mateo. Brandt will discuss the importance of neighborhood homeowners associations and why residents should be involved in the process at City Hall. We want to welcome all new residents and those who have lived here for many years. Come and get acquainted with your neighbors. Please join us on Thursday, June 8th at 7:30 PM.
Street Sweeping and Recycling Schedule: JUNE 2006
Street Sweeping will be on Mondays, JUNE 5th and 19th and Wednesdays, JUNE 7th and 21st. The sweeper will be here between 9-11 AM, so please remember to move your vehicles in order to avoid a ticket! Recycling by Allied Waste/BFI is on Fridays, JUNE 9th and 23rd. Please recycle all your newspapers, cans, plastics, glass, and cardboard (please remember to cut cardboard into square pieces). Don’t forget your garden clippings as well. Just a note to remind residents that your cans must be stored out of sight after Allied Waste/BFI makes its pickup! We all want to be good neighbors!
If you pay for BFI/ Allied Waste garbage service you have two free On-Call cleanups each year. To arrange an On-Call Cleanup, contact Allied Waste at (650) 592-2411 or check out Allied Waste’s web site at www.alliedwastesanmateocounty.com for more information. Here are some important points to remember: On-Call cleanups must be scheduled in advance with Allied Waste. Do not put out On-Call materials out more than 24 hours in advance of the scheduled pick-up day.
IVY on the Fence! Second request by the HOA.
For those homes that back up to the fence on Delaware and Concar, please take a look and see if the ivy is growing over and under the fence. Please remove it from the fence, so that it does not cause any damage. With all the rain we have had the ivy is sure to grow faster this spring and summer. If you get it under control now, you will save yourself problems in the future. The ivy growing is on your side of the property. There are many products on the market that can be useful to get rid of the ivy. Check with Home Depot or OSH stores, for assistance.
Have you JOINED the 19th Ave Park Homeowners Association and paid your dues of $12.00. It is June 2006 and the year is half over. According to our treasurer we have about 70 households who have paid their dues. That’s less than a third of our homes. We have 240 homes in 19th Ave Park and it’s a shame that more of you don’t take an interest in your neighborhood. Many of us on the Board have been doing their duty for over 15 years if not longer. We need some new people to get involved. The same people have given many hours of their time and effort to make sure the quality of life in 19th Ave Park is a good one. Jeanne has been our President for many years and has done a great job. Marshall and Helen Loring have been very helpful in many ways. Marshall has now expanded his horizons and volunteered with San Mateo County issues. Henry Friedlander has been Vice-President and editor of the newsletter for longer than he wants to think. We need new faces and we are looking at the younger families that live here in 19th Ave Park. Just a little time for such a worthwhile effort. The reward is a better neighborhood. Please contact Jeanne Burke at 574-4824, to volunteer.
Please don’t forget to VOTE on Tuesday, June 6, 2006. Every vote counts!
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS DAY KICKS OFF CITY’S LONG TERM PLAN: Jeff Hylton
While dozen 19th Ave Park residents attended the May 13th City hall meeting, we need all households to be actively involved. All who are well prepared will be able to respond to their own loved ones and coordinate resources with neighbors. Unprepared households will need to focus on their own needs and not benefit from neighborhood-wide, life-saving coordination of skillful and effective response.
STAGE ONE: All residents are greatly encouraged to attend an “Are You Ready” 90 minute meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at just one of the following:
Beresford Recreation Center June 13, July 12, or Aug 9
2720 Alameda de las Pulgas
- OR -
King Community Center June 29, July 17 or Aug 17
725 Mount Diablo
- OR -
San Mateo Senior Center June 22
2645 Alameda de las Pulgas
STAGE TWO: After this 90 minute household preparedness session, training dates for more comprehensive Neighborhood Emergency Services Team (NEST) training will be announced for this fall – including damage assessment, search and rescue, life-saving disaster medicine, fire fighting, communications, and command and control when disaster strikes.
Ultimately we need a representative from each block in our neighborhood to be trained at this more comprehensive Stage 2 eight-session level.
Remember: At any time, only 22 firefighters and 14 emergency medical technicians are on duty to care for 93,000 San Mateo residents. They will not be able to meet all of your needs, making this disaster preparedness training the most important thing that you can do for your family and loved ones.
Special thanks to our dozen 19th Ave Park neighbors who attended the kick-off.
The May United Homeowners Association meeting was a panel discussion entitled: “ Communities of Today and Tomorrow: The What, Where, and How of Transportation”, moderated by County Supervisor Jerry Hill and including six distinguished panelists. Exciting and inspiring Bay Area current and planned projects focused on increasing livability, affordability, and decreasing congestion. Your active involvement in keeping these long-term projects on track is needed to keep them moving forward to benefit you, our neighborhood and community. Contact Marshall Loring for more information at 345-2654.
