Part II-- Hetch Hetchy Water System

Our Guest speakers will be Tony Winnicker, Director of Communications, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). Tony will discuss the Hetch Hetchy and the rebuilding of the regional water system, and Lillian Brown from the SFPUC will speak about chloramines and fluoridation in our water.

We had a great turn out for this subject when the Environmental Defense representative spoke to our group in November. If you have some concerns about the drinking water system and what is being recommended for the Hetch Hetchy Project, this is the meeting to come to and bring your questions.

Please save the date and join us on Thursday, March 10, 2005 at 7:30 PM

We welcome all residents of 19th Ave Park. Please join us and get acquainted with your neighbors.

Joe Marchi, our last month’s speaker was excellent and the turn out was great. The music had all of us tapping our toes. We will have Joe Marchi back again at some time in the future, for another performance of great old time musicals.

Megan’s Law – Information on Registered Sex Offenders!

At our last Homeowner’s meeting there was some discussion on the new Megan’s Law Website and how residents can look up information. For those with computers, you can go to the California Department of Justice Internet web site (www.meganslaw.ca.gov), which lists designated registered sex offenders in California. As a result of a new law, this site will provide you with access to information on more than 63,000 persons required to register in California as sex offenders. If you don’t have a computer, you can go to the local police department and request the information. Our feeling is that this is how to protect yourself and your family. The web site allows you to enter your zip code and it will list the registered sex offenders that live within that area.

            Assessor warns against misleading mailings

After being deluged with inquiries by property owners, San Mateo County Assessor Warren Slocum is warning residents not to fall prey to any mailings offering to fill out homeowner exemption forms in return for a fee. The mailing states, “For a $25 fee, Property Tax Assessor Records Corporation offers to assist qualifying homeowners to obtain a homeowner’s exemption. The brochures target property owners without $7,000 of homeowner exemptions on their property. Slocum said, the exemption claim is a free service. He added concern about the mailing’s request for personal information, such as a social security number. Property owners can check on the status of their homeowner exemption by contacting the assessor’s office at  (650) 363-4500, via the web site at www.smcare.org, or in person at 555 County Center in Redwood City.

San Mateo United Homeowners Association report:

At the February’s United HOA meeting a representative from the Building Inspection and Permit Process, spoke to the group about the different types of permits required by either the homeowner or a Contractor. A permit is required prior to any building on your property. An example of some permits required are an electrical permit, and requirements for residential electric services. Building permits for reroofing projects, plumbing permits for residential water heaters – new or replacements. Before either you or a contractor does any work on your property, you should call the Building Inspections Divisions of the City of San Mateo at 522-7170 and check to see if a permit is required. Residents can also call and check to see if a neighbor, who is doing repairs, has obtained the proper permits. This is to protect you and the contractor to make sure the work is done to CODE. One major statement made by Rick Caro, Senior Building Inspector,  “you should not pay any contactor in full until the City has made its final inspection”. A contactor is aware of this requirement and it’s the contactor responsibility to call the City for the final inspection.

Peninsula Community Foundation has established a Neighborhood Grants Program that will award grants ranging in size from $500. to $6,000 to those neighborhoods groups with the most promising ideas for improving their neighborhoods as well as developing and nurturing relationships among community members. If anyone is interested in following up on this project, please contact Jeanne Burke. Maybe we can have a block party for all our residents in 19th Ave Park.
