July 4th Annual Block Party on Joanne Drive
Neighbors on Joanne Drive held their annual cookout; attendance reached over 130 residents including friends and family. Thanks to Ron and Becky Scharton for setting it up again. I hope next year more blocks in 19th Ave Park will do the same. It’s great to meet your neighbors and enjoy the good food that everyone brought for the potluck. The barbecue was kept busy with hamburgers, hotdogs and steaks!
National Night Out
Tuesday, August 3, 2004 is National Night Out. The Neighborhood Watch Program will be sponsoring this annual program. Each Neighborhood Watch block captain organizes his or her block for a Get Acquainted Block Party. It’s a good time to say hello and get to know your neighbors.

The time to Act is Now. Support the Local Government Compromise Budget Package.
- On July 9th, Local leader and the Administration stepped up and provided significant revisions to the constitutional protection measure to respond to stated concerns by the legislature. The revised framework provides continued strong protection of local revenues in the future, while also providing the State with flexibility in the event of a fiscal emergency.
- This revised compromise package is for good the state, good for local government, and also good for all Californians.
- This package is needed to protect the vital local services that each and every resident relies upon like police and fire, emergency medical, health care, water delivery, parks, roads and libraries.
- We need stat legislators to support the local government budget agreement this week.
Local Government has stepped up to the plate. Now it’s the Legislature’s turn to hit a home run – by balancing the budget and protecting California’s essential local services.
Voters Support Protection of Revenues for Local Services from State Raids.
Contact your local legislatures and have them support the State Budget.

Door-to-Door Solicitors - by Officer Robert Anderson
The San Mateo Police Department receives many calls concerning door-to-door solicitors and leaflet distributors in various neighborhoods throughout our city. The solicitors attempt to sell magazine subscriptions, goods and services, and some represent various religious or political organizations. Many residents do not want to be disturbed by unwanted solicitors who show up on their doorstep, and some wonder if solicitors need permits to operate in the city or whether the police department can do anything to stop them from knocking on their doors. In the past the City of San Mateo has required all solicitors to obtain a permit from City Hall. Due to recent court rulings, permits are no longer required. A resident who is not interested in purchasing any goods, services or information can ask a solicitor to leave, at which point the solicitor must leave the property. A resident who wishes to avoid this type of contact can post a ‘No Solicitors’ sign in front of their residence which provides notice to the solicitor that they are unwelcome. A citizen can always call the police if the suspicious or overly aggressive solicitor contacts them. The police phone for aggressive solicitation or suspicious activities is 522-7700.
